The Office of the Dean of Students (ODOS) is committed to providing all students with educational opportunities and academic and social supports to enhance their overall experience at the University of Virginia. As part of that purpose, ODOS is continually working to ensure that all students at the University of Virginia have equitable educational opportunities and access to opportunities and supports across Grounds. First-Generation Student Support is a unit out of ODOS that aims to support the University's more than 1,500 first-generation students through programming, social events, and connecting our first-generation community known as Hoos First. Hoos First is what we call our community of more than 1700 first-generation undergraduate students, faculty and staff. Through intentional connections and educational programming, First-Generation Student Support is here to help our first-gen students transition to the University of Virginia and thrive in their academic, social, and personal lives while they are here.
The University of Virginia defines a First-Generation College Student as any student where neither parent or guardian obtained a four-year degree. Our office also supports students whose parent or guardian may have completed a degree non-traditionally later in life, never attended college, or obtained a degree internationally.
On this website, you will find a series of resources for the support and encouragement of those in the Hoos First community.
