FGLI Student Groups

Below is a list of student groups/contracted independent organizations whose specific purpose is to support and/or mentor FGLI students

FLIP (First Generation/Low Income Partnership) at UVA is a student-run group on Grounds that seeks to build a community for first generation and/or low income (FGLI) students and allies at UVA. FLIP's mission is to coalesce students to advocate for an expansion of University resources, empowering the FGLI community through the endorsement of educational and economic equity. Through intentional community programming, FLIP at UVA hopes to render an invisible identity, visible.

Rise Together is a nonprofit tutoring and mentoring program that allows UVA mentors to build a relationship with motivated diverse first-generation college-bound high school, middle school and Pre-K students. Rise Together fosters a strong sense of community and enables teams of UVA mentors to create impactful mentoring sessions that meet the needs of the students they serve!

Rise Together school sites include Charlottesville High School, Albemarle County Community Public Charter School, the Piedmont YMCA Child Development Center and Walton Middle School. We provide transportation to and from school sites throughout the year and conduct monthly training workshops on Grounds. For more information, please visit our website or reach out to Bryan Christ (brc4cb), Rise Together Co-Director.

Hoos First Look is built on the foundation of diversity and student self-governance, in hopes of creating an awareness and understanding of socioeconomic differences in the University.  The program is an annual three-day, two-night academic enrichment program that occurs over a weekend in the Fall semester.  20 first gen/low-income prospective students are invited to Grounds with the goal of giving them the opportunity to experience UVA, providing them resources for the college application process, and forming strong bonds with each other and UVA student mentors.

QuestBridge, a nationally recognized program with 200 students at UVA,  is a powerful platform that connects the nation's brightest students from low-income backgrounds with leading institutions of higher education and further opportunities. We are an aggregator of excellence. By facilitating these exchanges, QuestBridge aims to increase the percentage of talented low-income students attending the nation's best universities and the ranks of national leadership itself.
